Our community is special for many reasons but one that I am particularly proud of is the Nelson Interfaith Climate Action Collaborative. Made up of 6 different faith groups from in and around Nelson, the group meets regularly to discuss the issue of climate change and actions that they can take to address it with our community, in line with the 100% Renewable Kootenays campaign.
Every month, a Climate Vigil also takes place which is hosted in rotation by one of the group members. The vigils are an opportunity for people to gather together, find commonality in the way we care for the earth, learn about other faiths and consider climate change in our daily lives.
The group was instrumental in creating the first ever Earth Day Parade that took place on Baker Street in April. The event was a huge success and brought the community together aroud our shared concern for the planet.
5 of the Interfaith groups have also made the commitment to 100% renewable energy by 2050 in their faith buildings! This is true local climate leadership and something to be celebrated and shared. We hope to grow this group and even inspire faith groups in other communities to collaborate around climate change too.
If you are a member of a faith group in the Kootenays and you're interested in finding out more about how you can start up an Interfaith group, then get in touch!
