100% Renewable Kootenays

We need the Kootenays to phase out fossil fuels and be on 100% renewable energy by 2050.

Through community engagement, advocacy and research, the 100% Renewable Kootenays campaign is seeking 100% renewable energy goals from our local governments in the Kootenays.

We are working to build community support for a renewable energy transition so that our local governments can make 100% renewable energy targets with their communities behind them. With a target and strong leadership, we can then plan a transition that is timely, inclusive and strives to build a resilient green economy.

Background

Communities in the West Kootenay region are signing on to a 100% renewable energy goal by 2050. This is in-line with the 100% Renewable Kootenays initiative that aims to bring about this needed transition in a just, supportive, community led way.

Our community is special for many reasons but one that I am particularly proud of is the Nelson Interfaith Climate Action Collaborative. Made up of 6 different faith groups from in and around Nelson, the group meets regularly to discuss the issue of climate change and actions that they can take to address it with our community, in line with the 100% Renewable Kootenays campaign.

The goal is to transition onto 100% renewable energy, and it's well-known that political commitments are an important step to get there. But what happens next?

Imagine if there was a way to save energy while also saving yourself money... did energy rebates come to mind?

The West Kootenay EcoSociety (WKES) asks that communities and regions within the West Kootenays (WK) adopt a target (100% RK target) to generating enough renewable energy (RE) to meet or exceed the energy that is consumed within their jurisdiction for:
